Closure statement

Dear Supporters,

We are sorry to have to inform you that we have decided to discontinue the Film Club. It has not been an easy decision, and is something that we have in fact been mulling over for quite a long time. There are a number of factors that have led to this decision.

The film club has now been in operation since January 2011 and since that time the delivery of film media has changed considerably. The growth of ‘streaming’ from the Internet has resulted in a number of companies now offering recent films that you can view on your television, or on mobile devices, while DVDs now become available much sooner after the film’s cinema release. This makes it difficult for us to provide something that people haven’t already seen. The fact that our film licensing company no longer offers licences for one of the major film distributors hasn’t helped.

It has indeed been very difficult at times to choose a film that we feel is suitable for you, our audience, and that is actually available to license. When we do choose badly we find that the audience numbers shrink to the point where the considerable effort of setting up the room and preparing all the pre-screening material starts to feel very unrewarding.

It’s also the case that during the seven years we have been operating, we have only covered our costs on a handful of occasions. Monies received in support of setting up the club are all that has kept it running.

Finally, much has changed personally for Pat and Bob since the club was set up in 2011, when there were five people involved in running it. Behind the scenes there is quite a bit to do. Besides choosing a suitable film, there is the need to produce publicity material, keep the web site updated and deal with the licencing administration.

So, once again, a sincere ‘sorry’ from us both, a thank you to all who have supported us, and a special thank you to a small number of people who have been with us consistently along the way. We shall miss you.

Sincerely, Pat & Bob
