“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”

Most people loved the first Marigold Hotel film and this sequel is every bit as good.

Our intrepid hotelier Sonny Kapoor, ably assisted by Mrs Donnelly (Maggie Smith), is looking to develop a second hotel, taking them at the beginning of the film to California to seek backers. On their return to India, as you may expect, not everything goes quite according to plan. The arrival of two new guests causes Sonny some anxiety as he is anticipating the arrival of an inspector from their potential investors in America, leading to a plot reminiscent of the brilliant ‘hotel inspector’ episode of Fawlty Towers.

Once again the splendour of India and the warmth of its people are both on display, while Sonny’s marriage to the love of his life Sunaina offers us a splendid cultural experience, although the lead up to the wedding is not without its problems. Meanwhile the love lives of the original guests develop, or falter, with Madge (Celia Imrie) trying to decide between two wealthy Indian suitors.

If you enjoyed the original film you will not be disappointed by this latest instalment.
